In Memoriam: Stephen Edward Lonie 1952-2019

Stephen Edward Lonie, businessman and non-executive director of MyState Bank, has passed away aged 67, following a short illness.

Stephen Edward Lonie, a former managing partner of the international accounting and consulting firm KPMG and non-executive director of MyState Bank, passed away on 17 November 2019 surrounded by his family, following a short illness. Mr Lonie was 67 years of age.

A successful businessman and chartered accountant, the Brisbane-based businessman worked at KPMG for over 30 years, including seven years as managing partner of Queensland. 

He also practiced as an independent management consultant and had served as a non-executive chairman of Central Queensland mining group Jellinbah Resources Pty Ltd, chairman of Apollo Tourism and Leisure Ltd, and non-executive director of Corporate Travel Management Ltd.

Mr Lonie was appointed to the MyState board on 12 December 2011 and served on the group audit committee and group people and remuneration committee. In 2017, he was appointed as chairman of the group digital business committee.

Speaking of Mr Lonie’s passing, MyState chairman Miles Hampton commented: “On behalf of the board and staff of MyState, I express our sincere condolences to Stephen’s family. He was a highly respected director who made a significant contribution to this business.”

“He will be sadly missed by all who knew him,” Mr Hampton said.

Mr Lonie was also chairman of Apollo Tourism and Leisure. He served on the Apollo advisory board from 2009 and was appointed chairman during the company’s initial public offering in 2016.

Apollo chief executive Luke Trouchet said: “On behalf of Apollo’s board and all of its employees, I extend my deepest sympathy to Stephen’s family and friends. Stephen’s contribution to the company was appreciated by all, and he will be sadly missed by the Apollo team”.

“On a personal note, I could not have asked for a better mentor. Stephen’s advice and wisdom over the years has been invaluable and he has been instrumental in Apollo’s growth. The legacy left by Stephen lives on, and he will always be fondly remembered.”

Mr Lonie was also on the board of trustees of Brisbane Grammar School, which both he and his son attended. 

A funeral service for family and friends will be held at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Spring Hill, Brisbane, on Friday, 22 November at 10.30am.
