CBA names new director

Commonwealth Bank has appointed a pre-eminent intellectual property lawyer as a non-executive director of its board.

Mary Padbury joins the major bank with an Australian and international legal career spanning more than 30 years.

She is a partner and vice-chairman of global law firm Ashurst, having served as chairman of Ashurst Australia for eight years prior to the group’s merger with Ashurst LLP to become an international firm in 2013.

Earlier in her career, Ms Padbury spent several years in the UK with boutique firm Bristows, as well as being a resident partner of Ashurst Australia.

Ms Padbury is a director of the Burnet Institute and the Australasian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group, and is also a member of the federal government’s Professional Standards Board for Patent and Trade Marks Attorneys and Melbourne University’s Law School Foundation.

Ms Padbury is recognised by Chambers Global as an ‘Eminent Practitioner’ in intellectual property for patents.

CBA chairman David Turner said he is delighted that a person of Ms Padbury’s calibre is joining the bank’s board.

“Her exemplary legal and governance skills, together with her international experience, will greatly benefit the bank’s board and will support the group’s vision and strategic initiatives,” he said.
