Finance players honoured in Orders of Australia

Among those honoured was John Lonsdale, deputy chair of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), who received a public service medal for outstanding public service in leading fiscal policy analysis and advice to the Prime Minister and cabinet.

APRA acknowledged the accolade, commenting: “Mr Lonsdale received the medal for outstanding public service through improving the stability, efficiency and competitiveness of Australia’s financial system and increasing the robustness of Australia’s foreign investment framework during his 30-year career at the Australian Treasury.

“Mr Lonsdale’s work in 2010 leading the development of the Competitive and Sustainable Banking System reform package, which improved outcomes for consumers and supporting smaller lenders to compete with the major banks, was cited as one of his notable achievements at Treasury.”

Also cited was Mr Lonsdale’s work in 2014 as head of the secretariat to the Financial System Inquiry.

During this time, APRA noted that the deputy chair delivered “the most comprehensive review of Australia’s financial system in nearly 20 years”.

Meanwhile, Jillian Broadbent, independent non-executive director of the Macquarie Group, received a public service medal for eminent service to corporate, financial, clean energy and cultural organisations, to higher education and women in business.

Ms Broadbent’s award comes after her recent appointment to the Macquarie Group’s board risk committee and board nominating committee in November 2018.

In 22 years at Bankers Trust Australia, she worked as economic strategist and then executive director for risk management of foreign exchange, interest rates and commodities until 1998.

In 2003, she was made an Officer of the Order of Australia, for service to economic and financial development in Australia through administrative support and charitable groups.

David Hoare was another awardee, recognised for eminent service to the finance and business sectors, telecommunications industry, education, health and cultural organisations.

As a fellow of senate for eight years from 1998 to 2005, Mr Hoare served as chair of the finance, audit, investment and senate’s remuneration committees.

In addition, Joseph Castellino was awarded a public service medal for leading fiscal policy analysis and advice to the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

The Governor-General also recognised John Atkins, Karl Morris, Andrew Pridham and Jillian Segal as officers (AO) in the general division.

As Agent General for Western Australia in the European office (London) between 2015 and 2018, Mr Atkins was acknowledged for distinguished service to the business, financial and legal sectors, and to the community.

Mr Atkins was previously chairman of the Western Australia ANZ Group between 2008 and 2013, and partner at Herbert Smith Freehills between 1988 and 2008.

He had also been director of PearlStreet and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, while being president and chair of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Western Australia between 2011 and 2013.

Mr Morris, director of South East Zone and The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland Limited, was acknowledged for distinguished service to the financial and stockbroking sectors and to the community through a range of organisations.

His stockbroking career launched in 1990 as a private client adviser at the same company before assuming the roles of managing director and chief executive officer between 2004 to 2009.

Mr Pridham, chief executive officer of Moelis & Company and Sydney Swans chairman, was awarded for distinguished service to the investment banking and asset management sector, sporting groups, and philanthropy.

In previous years, Mr Pridham was managing director and head of investment banking at UBS Australasia.

Meanwhile, Ms Segal was listed for distinguished service to the banking and financial regulation sectors, not-for-profit organisations, and to women.

At present, she is a director of Rabobank Australia Limited, Rabobank New Zealand Limited and Rabo Australia Limited.

Ms Segal was previously a member of the federal government’s Remuneration Tribunal and director of ASX Limited and National Australia Bank Limited.

The Governor-General also listed Geoffrey Brunsdon and Marie Wilton as officers (AO) in the general division.

Mr Brunsdon, who serves as the executive chairman of ICS Advisory Pty Ltd, was acknowledged for significant service to the finance, banking and insurance sectors, and charitable organisations.

Mr Brunsdon has been director at ING Australia Holdings Limited and ING Bank (Australia) Limited since 2009.

Meanwhile, Ms Wilton – with 30 years of investment industry and leadership experience in asset management and superannuation – was awarded for significant service to the business and finance sector and to the community.

For 12 years running, she was managing director and chair of Franklin Templeton Investments Australia and senior director of International Advisory Services.
