ANZ deputy CFO appointed group GM of internal audit

The major bank has appointed Shane Buggle as group general manager, internal audit, replacing Kevin Corbally who transitioned to chief risk officer.

Mr Buggle has worked at ANZ Bank for more than 20 non-consecutive years in various senior roles, including as deputy CFO, which he will maintain.

In his new role, Mr Buggle will be responsible for “providing the board and executive committee with independent assurance on [ANZ’s] operations”, according to the major bank’s CEO, Shayne Elliot.

Prior to rejoining ANZ in 2003, the new group general manager, internal audit, was head of finance at Zurich Financial Services in Ireland. At present, Mr Buggle is also a member of Monash University’s council and has been deputy chancellor since 2015.

He will start his new role on 1 July 2018, reporting to the chair of the audit committee, Paula Dwyer.

Earlier this month, ANZ announced that its retiring deputy CEO, Graham Hodges, would be replaced by Alexis George, who maintains her current role as group executive of wealth, Australia, which she has held since 2016.

She continues to lead the divestment of ANZ’s life insurance, superannuation and aligned dealer group businesses, and has also taken on responsibility for ANZ’s group service centres.

Ms George, who joined the major bank in 2013 as managing director of insurance, is further assisting the CEO with initiatives including the bank’s engagement with the government, regulators and employees.

The managing director of business and private banking, Mark Hand, was named group executive for Australian business and private banking on the executive committee.

He joined ANZ in 1988, holding senior roles across business and retail banking, credit management and internal audit in Australia, the Middle East and South Asia.
